LOFT New Book Club Meets Monthly on the Second and fourth Thursdays at 7pm From Pulp Fiction to Queer Literature, The LOFT's Book Club is your way of keeping up on the latest in LGBT literature, while finally getting to those better-known genre pieces you haven't gotten around to reading. To whet your appetite, at our first meeting we'll distribute a starter pack of selected shorts and book excerpts including works by the likes of Leslea Newman, Michael Nava, Jennifer Finney Boylanm, Steve Chbosky, Lee Lynch, and Felice Picano. will be distributed to get you hungry from more. Then, We'll brain storm a list of books from member suggestions and "best" lists to curl up with against the cold. LOFT Book Club June Selection: Editorial Review From Booklist LOFT Book Club June selection: The 19th Wife: A Novel by David Ebershoff Meeting Dates: Thursdays, June 10th and 24th at 7 pm. About The 19th Wife from The New Yorker: This ambitious third novel tells two parallel stories of polygamy. The first recounts Brigham Young's expulsion of one of his wives, Ann Eliza, from the Mormon Church; the second is a modern-day murder mystery set in a polygamous compound in Utah. Unfolding through an impressive variety of narrative forms—Wikipedia entries, academic research papers, newspaper opinion pieces—the stories include fascinating historical details. We are told, for instance, of Brigham Young's ban on dramas that romanticized monogamous love at his community theatre; as one of Young's followers says, "I ain't sitting through no play where a man makes such a cussed fuss over one woman." Ebershoff demonstrates abundant virtuosity, as he convincingly inhabits the voices of both a nineteenth-century Mormon wife and a contemporary gay youth excommunicated from the church, while also managing to say something about the mysterious power of faith.
