The Incomplete Guide to Trans and Non Binary Identities


Workshop Description: Using PowerPoint slides, Anthony illustrates lessons in trans terminology, the four specrta in LGBTQ, transition myth busting and cultural competency which includes non-binary representation.  The presentation highlights the importance of the use proper gender etiquette for transgender persons to prevent the worsening of dysphoria and to create awareness of the various statistics on suicidal risk according to gender identity, ethnicity and social stresses.  Suitable for for LGBTQ people providing arguments for self advocacy, and also for their allies, partners, employers, teachers, mental health providers and any future public policy warriors.


Workshop Format: Questions and answers from the audience are welcome during the presentation to provide valuable feedback and deeper understanding.


Bio: Anthony Arrien is a 66 year old transgender man who has facilitated The LOFT’s adult transgender peer support group twice per month for several years. In addition to Trans Forum he has done presentations at Philly Transgender Wellness Conference, TransLives: in Connecticut, PrideWorks, local library programs and for medical and mental health associations. He is a board member of The LOFT and GLSEN Hudson Valley, is active in PFLAG Putnam and is chair of the LGBTQIA Social Justice Team at Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation in White Plains.  He is also a filmmaker who produces PSA's and has done legislative visits for LGBTQ advocacy in New York State.
