Announcing a Special Virtual Field Trip on Thursday, August 19th, 2021!
On August 19th we will be having a shortened session of C.A.L.M. / Queer Zen from 5:30pm to 6pm ET and then join us at 6pm ET as we take a virtual field trip to the Fellowship Forum being held virtually by The Garrison Institute. Registration is required to receive the zoom link for the Fellowship Forum event, click on Register below the speaker bios. Please Note: The 5:30pm C.A.L.M. / Queer Zen zoom link will be a separate link from the 6pm event zoom link.
For this Fellowship Forum, Rashid Hughes joins us to facilitate an experiential contemplative practice called R.E.S.T.
We will discuss the intersections of liberation and contemplative practice with a particular focus on how this practice is an antidote to the systems of capitalism and white supremacy. With an emphasis on skillfully unhooking from patterns of striving and obsessive seeking, R.E.S.T. provides a path of liberation that is rooted in resting and being aware. The invitation is for all people to reconnect with grace, the experience of being willing to rest, while being fully awake.

The Garrison Institute Fellowship Forum is a series of conversations with extraordinary leaders with expertise and experience in awareness-based contemplative wisdom, the science of interconnection, generative action, and collective healing. Each conversation will be co-facilitated by the Garrison Institute Fellows and Fellowship Director Dr. Angel Acosta.
This forum will be a live meeting, which will be conducted on Zoom at 6:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 19th. The meeting link will be emailed to participants within twenty-four hours of your registration. Please email us at [email protected] with questions.
Speakers:
Rashid Hughes (he/him) is a writer, meditation teacher, yoga instructor and a restorative justice facilitator. He is the co-founder of the Heart Refuge Mindfulness Community, a Mindfulness Community in Washington, DC that is dedicated to inspiring Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to live with love and courage. Rashid is an Affiliate Teacher for the Insight Meditation Community of Washington D.C. and he is also a teacher of the Presence Collective. He holds a Master of Divinity Degree from the Howard University School of Divinity and has two recently published articles in Mindful Magazine “R.E.S.T.-A Guided Practice for the Tired & Weary” and Lions Roar Magazine “When Aggression Masquerades as Compassion.”
For the last decade, Dr. Angel Acosta has worked to bridge the fields of leadership, social justice, and mindfulness. He holds a doctorate degree in curriculum and teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. Acosta has supported more than educational leaders and their students by facilitating leadership trainings, creating pathways to higher education, and designing dynamic learning experiences. His dissertation explored healing-centered education as a promising framework for educational leadership development. After participating in the Mind and Life Institute’s Academy for Contemplative Leadership, Acosta began consulting and developing learning experiences that weave leadership development with conversations about inequality and healing, to support educational leaders through contemplative and restorative practices. As a former trustee for the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, he participated as a speaker and discussant at the Asia Pacific Forum on Holistic Education in Kyoto, Japan. He continues to consult for organizations like the NYC Department of Education, UNICEF, Columbia University and others. Over the last couple of years, he has designed the Contemplating 400 Years of Inequality Experience–a contemplative journey to understand structural inequality. He’s a proud member of the 400 Years of Inequality Project, based at the New School.
