The Right To Thrive

Legal protections for TGNCNB communities at the local, state, and federal levels are constantly changing. This workshop will review how individuals and families can use existing laws and regulations to empower themselves in a variety of personal and professional settings.

Shain Filcher brings a wide breadth of personal and professional experience fighting for LGBTQ+ people of all ages, particularly LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. Shain is the Executive Director of LGBT Bar NY. Prior, they served as a Staff Attorney within the LGBTQ+ Legal Project at Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. In that role, they worked on a wide variety of legal issues specific to members of the LGBTQ+ communities, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression, obtaining court-ordered name changes, accessing affirming healthcare, and recognition of legal parentage. They were named to the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association’s “Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40 Class of 2021” and the 2022 New York City Law Power 100 list. Shain received their law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law and BA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
