Workshop Description: The presentation will provide an overview of significant state and national changes in the law (or lack thereof) that occurred over the last year affecting TGNCNB community members. PLEASE NOTE, this presentation is legal information as opposed to specific advice and counsel prepared for a person’s unique legal situation.


Workshop Format: This 75-minute workshop will be a 60-minute PowerPoint presentation accompanied by a 15-minute question and answer session.


Bios:

Shain Filcher, Esq. (they/he) Staff Attorney, LGBTQ+ Legal Project, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley

Shain Filcher brings a wide breadth of personal and professional experience fighting for LGBTQ+ people of all ages, particularly LGBTQ+ youth in crisis.

Currently, Shain Filcher serves as a Staff Attorney within the LGBTQ+ Legal Project at Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. In this role, they work on a wide variety of legal issues specific to members of the LGBTQ+ communities, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression, name changes, accessing affirming healthcare, and recognition of legal parentage.

Active in the legal community both locally and nationwide, Shain Filcher spends a great deal of time working within bar associations dedicated to promoting justice in and through the legal profession for all LGBTQ+ people. They are the current Vice President of the LGBT Bar Association Foundation of Greater New York (“LeGaL”). Additionally, they serve on the National LGBT Bar Association Membership Committee and the National Conference of Bar Presidents Membership Communications Committee.

Shain Filcher received their law degree from University of Oregon School of Law and BA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Shary Sanchez, Esq. (she/her/ella)

Attorney-in-Charge Peekskill Office, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley

Shary Sanchez is the Attorney-in-Charge of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley’s Peekskill Office, which serves Northern Westchester and Putnam County. Ms. Sanchez joined Legal Services of the Hudson Valley in 2012 as a general practice Staff Attorney in White Plains where she provided legal assistance in eviction prevention, family law, public benefits, disability, and future planning matters. In 2015, Ms. Sanchez became the Supervising Attorney of the White Plains office, overseeing Housing, Public Benefits, the Disability Advocacy Project, the HIV Unit, and the LGBTQ Legal Project. From 2009 to 2012, Ms. Sanchez worked at the HIV Law Project in New York City where she provided civil legal assistance to individuals infected and affected with HIV/AIDS.

She attended NYC public schools and graduated from Binghamton University where she majored in Sociology & Africana Studies and minored in Latin American & Caribbean Area Studies. Upon graduating from college, Ms. Sanchez attended and graduated from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Ms. Sanchez currently serves on the board of directors for The LOFT GBTQ+ Community Center; is a member of the Diversity Commission of the New York State Bar Association; and serves as a member of the HIV Health and Human Services Planning Council of New York.
